The time will come...

The time will come when one day I will have a 16, 13,11 and 9 yr old. If the days fly as fast as they already have.....it will come too fast for me. I have decided to write a letter to my oldest and first to-be teenager, Ace.  He will get to read this on his 16th birthday (a mere 6 yrs away).  Can that be right??

Ace,
Wow,I have been worried about this day for the last 10 yrs. I even wrote this 6 years in anticipation of worry and needed to write down some of my worldly advice. Here is some advice from your old ma!

1. There will come a moment when you'll want to rebel!(if not already). I hate to think you may..... It may be from our rules, school or maybe even society. Just don't! It will only make things worse and drive us crazy! Therefore lots of privileges you had will be gone. Let's not have too much of that, please! You are too good to go bad!

2. Remember, she more than likely will not become your future wife.(assuming that you will have a girlfriend buy now). Enjoy your teen years (though, not too much), they go so fast! Have some balance. Do great at school and sports because that will take you far! Use your time wisely.don't get caught up in all the drama a girlfriend can bring....been there done that! Instead of focusing all your energy on  girls, make some great guy friends now.Chose them wisely! This one choice will have a lasting effect on your future! Work at preserving those friendships and mature with them. Friendship based on trust, support, good morals and similar beliefs will still be your friends at age 35. I regret not working as hard as I could have in this area. It will be SO worth it. Never blow off a friend for a girl...well the exception would be to spend  more time with little ole me, of course!

3. Remember my rule I began to engrave in your little memory in kindergarten.....if mom was there would you still behave this way?" if the answer is no, Don't!! Oh Ace, please just don't! i hope that things have changed in this area by the time you read this....I HOPE!! You are a wild thing, behaved but wild and fearless. THIS makes me worried for these teen years!

 4. Remember that Boomer, Tank and Q look up to you! Make them proud!!Support them as well....it is hard on them having such big shoes to follow. Continue to be a great big brother to these guys...you'll have them forever...EVEN after Dad and I are gone!

5. Stay genuine! You are such a nice guy! Don't let anyone take that away!! Be kind and thoughtful and always helpful! It means you have a heart of gold. Don't tarnish that!

6. This too shall pass- great words to remember!Always sleep on it, you'll usually have more clarity in the morning!

7.   You are smart enough, strong enough and brave enough! Always will be, period. Know we are here, if you need us...I hope you take that all in deep within your soul.

8. Don't worry so much! I wish I were given this advice at 16. By the time you are 30, you probably won't remember 99% of what kept you up at night  these days at 16! Believe me! Look at this face.....he wasn't worried in the least! Remember these times and it will be fine!

9. Dad and I will make mistakes. Hey, this is a whole new domain for us! Be easy on us! We were teenagers once too! Life is ultimately about choices. Make good ones you never will have regrets. Bad ones can linger FOREVER!

and 10. We love you more than you ever will know and are your biggest fans! Be the guy we know you were meant to be and continue to wow and amaze us each day! Happy sweet 16 my lil man~

Love you,
Mom (and Dad too)
